On February 6, 2017, Newen acquired a majority stake in Tuvalu Media Group, the leading
independent TV content producer in the Netherlands, from its historical shareholders (Taco Zimmerman, Duurt Holman and Douwe van der Werf) and Dutch private equity firm Karmijn Kapitaal. Taco Zimmerman and Douwe van der Werf will retain a minority equity stake and will continue to manage the company.
This acquisition is in line with the announced strategy of Newen, with the support of TF1 Group, to be a leading European player in audiovisual content production and distribution with a presence in key Media markets.
Tuvalu is a full-service production house with a proven ability of creating high quality, cross-media content on the back of its creative capabilities, which has been demonstrated through the impressive track-record in development from paper to proven and in bringing international formats to the dynamic Dutch market. Tuvalu is active in entertainment, factual, scripted reality and scripted series. Key shows of the company include “The First Years”, “My New Home”, “Maestro” (BBC format) or “Cover Me”.
By joining forces with Newen, Tuvalu will be able to pursue and accelerate both its organic and inorganic growth and will benefit from Newen extensive skills in scripted production and in distribution together with an access to Newen R&D teams.
Through this acquisition, Newen Group will have a direct presence in the Netherlands and will complete Newen Network geographical footprint on top of existing commercial partnerships in Germany, Spain and Canada. With this alliance, Newen will be able to leverage on Tuvalu strong track record in non-scripted formats creation and adaptation.
Tanguy de Franclieu, MD of Newen Studios, says: “Acquiring a majority equity stake in Tuvalu will allow Newen to complete its geographical footprint, alongside Newen Network, in a very creative market. We are very happy to implement this strategic alliance with Tuvalu founders who share with us a common entrepreneurial DNA and a strong focus on original quality creation. That partnership will enable both Newen and Tuvalu to best serve their respective clients.”
Taco Zimmerman, CEO of Tuvalu Media Group says: “The new partnership will strengthen the position of Tuvalu, both in our domestic market as internationally. We expect with Newen to boost Tuvalu as an international, creative content hub: both on the format as on the scripted market. It will grow our international network, will offer us a direct outlet in France and give the ability to invest more in creating new IP. We are both very much on the ball and have big ambitions for the future.”
Nielen Schuman, Ernst & Young and De Breij Evers Boon acted as advisors to Tuvalu Media Group and Deloitte and Hogan Lovells acted as advisors to Newen on the transaction.

This game show, produced by Flab and hosted by famous French comic Jean-Luc Lemoine, sees the pair of contestants challenged to keep as much money as possible from their starting purse of 100.000 euros by doing only one thing: guessing the correct age of the 6 strangers presented to them. Observation and intuition will be key to their success!
To help them, 5 clues are at their disposal but they can only be used once. All have a link to the strangers birth year: a song, a celebrity, a memory, the zoom and an event.
For every age correctly guessed, they get a bonus but for every year of difference between their guess and the truth, they lose money … and the more they advance in the game and the more money it is per year’s difference. The final round sees them have 4 tries and 4 clues to correctly guess the age of the 6th stranger.
GUESS MY AGE is a French creation successfully distributed internationally by Vivendi Entertainment since its launch in Cannes for MIPTV 2016. The format rights have already been sold to 18 territories such as the United States & the UK and the first international adaptations are expected to launch this fall.
